A 105-year-old woman, Kathleen Hennings has revealed that her secret to a long life is enjoying a pint of Guinness and staying single.

Guinness is a famous Irish stout beer with a blend of bitterness and sweetness, featuring roasted barley that gives it a deep coffee-like taste.

According to Care UK, Kathleen marked her 105th birthday, Wednesday, October 2nd, 2024.

“We all drank Guinness at home; we all liked it… and I still do. I was introduced to Guinness in my late teens by my parents; who both drank it regularly at home.

“Also my older brother Charlie also drank Guinness at home so it became the drink of choice at family mealtimes and I’ve kept drinking it to this day,” she told Care UK.

Commenting on her big day, Kathleen said: “It was so nice to see my lovely friends and neighbours. I’ve been spoilt – thank you so much.”

Born in 1919 in Brixton, UK, Kathleen lived a life as an accountant in London and spent her free time enjoying dances at Covent Garden and soaking up operas and ballets.

Now, at 105, she’s still going strong, happily embracing her single life with a pint of her favourite beer.

Celebrating her big day in a care home surrounded by friends and staff, Kathleen was all smiles as she raised her glass, crediting her long life to ‘beer and staying single.’ Her friends even made sure she had extra cans of Guinness and special pint glasses to mark the occasion.

Home Manager at Sandfields, Malaika Charles said: “We love celebrating special milestones at Sandfields, and Kathleen’s 105th birthday certainly called for a party!

“It was wonderful to see Kathleen surrounded by all her loved ones to commemorate such an incredible milestone. The team put in a lot of effort to ensure that her day was memorable, and we want to say thank you to everyone who joined us in raising a glass of Guinness to Kathleen.”

So, while others may search high and low for the secrets to a long life, Kathleen Hennings says her tried-and-true formula is simple: “Drink Guinness and don’t marry.”
