Transport minister Barbara Creey has tasked the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) to investigate the cause of the horrific crash that claimed the lives of 10 people on the N1 highway in Free State and submit a preliminary report within 48 hours.
The accident happened on Sunday morning, 8 December.

According to the Department of Transport, a minibus taxi crashed into truck. The incident took place approximately 20km from Koppies on the N1, heading towards Kroonstad. Only two people survived; one from the taxi and the truck driver.
The road had to be closed as emergency services personnel had to extract bodies from the wreckage.
Following the incident, the minister of transport extended her condolences to the bereaved families and the loved ones of those who lost their lives.
Creecy also wished for the individual who sustained serious injuries a speedy and complete recovery.
Creecy and her deputy Mkhuleko Hlengwa also emphasised that this crash happened after the recent launch of the Road Safety Campaign for the festive season, which means that law enforcement officers must be out in their numbers to calm down the traffic, especially in the identified hotspots, with N1 being one of those spots.
