Veteran actress Leleti Khumalo has expressed her heartfelt tribute to her ex-husband and renowned playwright, director, and lyricist, Mbongeni Ngema.
Speaking outside the Durban International Convention Centre (ICC) where Ngema’s funeral service was held, Khumalo shared her support for the Ngema family during this difficult time.

Khumalo acknowledged the significant role Ngema played in her career, stating, “UMadlokovu [Ngema] basically introduced me to this industry. I was very young, and I owe a lot to him.” She credited Ngema for putting her on the global map and launching her into the entertainment industry, which she deeply appreciates.

The actress rose to fame for her portrayal of Sarafina in Ngema’s 1992 musical blockbuster of the same name. She also appeared in his music videos, further solidifying their artistic collaboration.
Despite their 15-year age difference, Khumalo and Ngema tied the knot in 1992 but divorced in 2005. In the years following their separation, Khumalo bravely opened up about surviving domestic violence at the hands of the celebrated theatre giant.
In a 2020 interview, Ngema acknowledged his past as an abuser and declared himself a “rehabilitated” man, dedicating himself to the fight against gender-based violence.
