He was the subject of a Carte Blanche investigation last month, which found that his greatest level of education was grade ten.

Weeks after being elected mayor, he argued that his academic achievements had no impact on his capacity to run the city.
He told Eyewitness News that he had earned a National Intermediate Certificate (NIC).
According to the website of the Department of Higher Education, the NIC is a level three certificate that is issued to a student upon completion of grade ten.
It entitles the holder to study at a technical and vocational education and training (TVET) college.
Gwamanda claimed to have earned a National Intermediate Certificate.
The credential is gained after completing grade 10 and intending to enrol in a TVET college.
“The only thing that I have is a NIC certificate.”
Gwamanda explains why he didn’t continue his studies after obtaining the certificate.

“The reason why I did not continue was because I had to focus on other issues. Me focusing on building my family meant that I had to work harder than the rest of us.”
This is in contradiction to Al Jama-ah leader Ganief Hendricks, who told Carte Blanche that Gwamanda had a business diploma.
